Cornwall Samaritans, based at Truro, is a busy branch the only one in Cornwall. Approx 53,000 contacts are made a year by phone, email, texts and face to face.
About 1 in 5 callers have suicidal thoughts proving how valuable the service is. The branch is manned completely by volunteers, about 100, who give up their time to listen and support callers.
Samaritans do not judge, or make assumptions about the callers and never tell the caller what to do – the caller doesn’t even have to give a name and calls cannot be traced.
The branch is totally self supporting and always welcomes new volunteers, either to help in the general running of the branch or to become a listening volunteer.
