Children from junior schools across Penwith came to Penzance Tennis Club on Thursday to compete in the annual Schools Tennis Tournament. There were two competitions, one for Under 8s and one for Under 11s. Each school team was represented by four players who played other schools in their division.
In a very close Under 8 competition Alverton School were the champions beating Five Islands School in the final. Nancledra School were third and only missed out on a place in the final by a single point.
The Under 11 competition was won by St Uny School with Five Islands School again coming second and Alverton coming third.
Tournament Director at Penzance Tennis Club, Sammy Bassett said “it has been a fantastic day for everyone involved. The standard of the tennis has been extremely high and the sportsmanship showed by the young players has been excellent.”
The Schools Tennis Tournament is part of the School Games programme organised by Neil Eddy at Mounts Bay Academy. Through this tournament Alverton, Five Islands and St Uny Schools have qualified for the county final in June where they will take on players from other schools in Cornwall.
