Situated in in the stunning Morrab Gardens and set in a fine Victorian Mansion, Morrab Library is a large independent library, it is the only one in Cornwall and one of only thirty that remain in the United Kingdom. The library boasts over 55,000 volumes including works of literature, history, travel and religion.
The library boasts a marvellous series of collections gradually acquired since its founding in 1818, some works were printed as far back as 1801. The library’s Jenner Room has brought together and extensive Cornish collection which alongside holdings on other Celtic countries acts as a centre for Celtic studies. The library offers great research potential with extensive runs of eighteenth and nineteenth century periodicals which include over a century of Cornish newspapers dating back to before 1850 and seventeenth and eighteenth century Parliamentary reports.
More modern reading tastes are also catered for; the Reading Room with its current reference books and magazines is especially sunny and welcoming.
The relaxed and friendly atmosphere of Morrab Library is testament to its constantly growing membership numbers, describing itself as a library for those “who like books and people” we are privileged to have such a place in our little corner of the world… two hundred years and still going strong… long may it continue!
